Mercedes-Maybach has given those who have safety concerns another option with its new 2017 S600 Guard, which has armor plating and is the first car to earn a VR10 certification—the highest ballistic protection rating a civilian vehicle can earn.

According to Mercedes, to be VR10 certified a model must have bodywork and windows that can withstand hardened steel bullets fired from an assault rifle. So even in a warzone, owners won’t be getting any blood on the leather interior of their Maybach.

Even the under carriage of the S600 is armored, meaning it is protected against an explosive blast, and even the sides of the car feature special plating to help handle such an explosion. All of this is achieved with special steels and other materials overlapping in the bodywork of the vehicle to create maximum structural strength.

Mercedes has boosted the power and suspension of the Guard to handle the extra weight from the armoring process and has even equipped the car with “special technical features” to help the S600 remain road worthy after an assault.

The Guard model doesn’t look too different than the regular Mercedes-Maybach S600, which is perfect for owners who don’t want to alert their enemies to the fact that they’re riding in an armored vehicle.

This is the newest edition of Mercedes’ Guard armored vehicle lineup, which also includes the S500 and S600 examples of its standard S-Class, and the G500 Guard, GLE 350d Guard, GLE500 Guard SUVs models.

The Maybach S600 Guard is available to safety-minded recipients at a starting price of $518,000.
