The Finolhu Villas by Club Med in the Maldives, one of the world’s hottest vacation destinations, is proving luxury can be green by running completely on solar power.
The new five-star resort located on a 13-acre island on the Kaafu Atoll was designed by New York’s Yuji Yamazaki Architecture and is the first of its kind in the world. The island getaway can accommodate 100 guests year round in its 52 villas, tastefully covered in solar panels and shaped ceilings that curve up like cresting waves.
On a sunny day with clear skies the resort can generate around one megawatt of energy. On top of that, each room is designed to minimize energy consumption, creating a surplus and storing extra energy for rainy days.
With a green waste management system and desalination tanks to create its own water, The Finolhu Villas is dependent solely on its surroundings.
