BMW has introduced the first-ever water-injected production car in the world with the limited-edition 2016 M4 GTS.
The BMW water injection system introduces a precisely measured spray of H2O into the intake manifold of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine. When the water evaporates it extracts energy and lowers the temperature of the intake air by up to 80 degrees F to help lower emissions, raise the gas mileage, and increase torque and power.
This all results in a 68-horsepower increase to the straight-six engine from the stock M4 to deliver 493 horses and 442 pound-feet of torque. The powerful GTS model can reach speeds of up to 190 mph with a zero to 60 sprint of 3.7 seconds.
BMW only plans to ship 300 of the 700 M4 GTS models it will make to the U.S. While the standard M4 starts at $65,000, the upgraded water-injection models are sure to cost a bit more.
