Brooklyn design firm Uhuru has branched out from its usual work on simple, chic furniture to develop an all-new jewelry collection.
With an emphasis on the raw beauty of the materials used, the items include earrings, rings, bracelets, cuffs, and bold collar necklaces.
Handcrafted in Uhuru’s Red Hook studio, black diamonds, 10-karat recycled gold, and locally sourced pebbles give each piece a character of its own.
The timeless new pieces blend a classic contemporary look with natural coarseness created by placing thin sheets of gold on the surface of waterfront rocks and then applying a hammer for texture.
Uhuru’s new collection also takes inspiration from an ancient Japanese wood-preserving method called shou-sugi-ban. The unique process brings out the wood’s natural texture through a charring process followed by a steel-brush cleaning and natural oil finish.
Pieces in Uhuru’s jewelry collection range from $200 to $20,000.
