Advances in drone technology offer fun, convenience and power depending on their intended use. Now drones are being used to create art in the up-and-coming field of drone photography. Cameras are attached to the flying vehicles to provide new angles and perspectives for photos. There are even competitions for the new field, and Dronestagram just held its second annual drone photography competition.

Dronestagram is an online interface where photographers can view, like and comment on photos and videos captured by drones and uploaded by their users. More than 5,000 entries came in this year from all around the world from both pros and amateurs alike. The company paired with two National Geographic photographers to form the judging panel.

Ricardo Matiello won the Place category with a cityscape image taken by a GoPro attached to his custom-built drone. The image captures the top edges of Maringá, Brazil’s tallest buildings. The beautiful images were a complete surprise to Matiello since he didn’t know how the images would turn out until the drone returned from above a blanket of fog with the photos on his memory card.

A photo of snorkelers swimming among sharks in French Polynesia taken by user tahitiflyshoot won the Nature category, and an image of a crowd of party-goers captured by user FlyMediaCy won first place for Dronies, which is the drone version of a selfie.
