The Freightliner Inspiration autonomous big rig was recently unveiled at the Hoover Dam with a presentation that included 60 HD projector that covered more than 420,000 square feet on the Dam’s surface.
The rig and the presentation were both impressive. The presentation broke the Guinness record for highest light output, while the rig itself has the potential to be industry-changing according to Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, member of the board of management of Daimler AG.
The Hoover Dam provides the ideal setting for a debut as significant to the trucking industry as this. Not only was it built primarily using trucks, but it signifies inspiration like few other structures in the world. “To show the significance and opportunities of autonomous driving functions for the global trucking industry we were willing to go ways that people did not dare to think about before,” Bernhard said. “The Inspiration truck’s debut was made even more notable with Freightliner’s Guinness World Records title of the highest light output projection.”
The truck uses radar sensors and a stereo camera to ensure that it can navigate the road safely and intelligently, and react to real-world situations in real-time to autonomously reach a destination. The piloting system was tested for over 10,000 miles in Germany and was able to safely navigate the highways.
The truck’s lights are white when a driver is behind the wheel and blue when it’s in autonomous mode. The trucks’ cockpit has a detachable monitor so the driver can monitor the vehicle when it is in autonomous mode.
The rig is not yet ready for American roads and will remain a concept until regulations can catch up with the technology.
