Volvo recently showed off an interior designed for vehicles that are intended to be driven by a chauffeur.

“We started this work by looking at the executive lifestyle,” Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo’s vice president of design, said. “With our progressive approach to premium design and functionality we analysed the needs and perspective of the chauffeur-driven executive, designing the car around him or her in the spirit of our brand’s aim.”

The front passenger seat has been completely removed to maximize leg room and provide enough space for a Lounge Console. The Lounge Console is a foldable piece that can act as a work table, storage compartment, vanity mirror, or be used as a screen to view entertainment.

“A key element in our thinking was how to make the available interior space work for the occupants in an optimal and luxurious fashion,” Ingenlath said. “Removing the passenger seat enabled us to create an open space that dramatically changes the dynamics of the interior.”

In addition to the Lounge Console and extra leg room, there is a compartment to store shoes, a lockable compartment to stow away expensive goods such as jewelry, and a cushioned leg rest. The seats also recline.

“We understand the desire to make subtle changes to one’s appearance throughout the day; a change of cufflinks, different watch or tie, or perhaps to refresh your makeup, change jewelry or put on a different pair of shoes,” Tisha Johnson, Volvo’s chief interior designer, said.

Currently this is just a concept. No word on whether Volvo’s chauffeur-passenger-focused interior could be an interior option in upcoming vehicles.
