Located in the exclusive Montecito area in Santa Barbara, Cali., the Rancho San Carlos estate is on the market with a list price of $125 million.

“This is the largest parcel in Montecito,” Harry Kolb, real estate agent handling the sale, said. It’s also “the largest residence, being just under 30,000 square feet, and it’s done by a very renowned Pasadena architect, Reginald Johnson.”

The home sits on 237 acres. It has 12 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms. In such a large home it is hard to pick out the most notable features. However, the living room with its two fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, and French doors that lead to a terrace that itself leads to a library may be the room that epitomizes the home. The living room also has a secret doorway that opens to a staircase that leads to an in-home pub.

“One of the things I find remarkable about this house is that it reminds me of the Italian villas in Milan and Lake Como, where the same families have owned the properties for generations. You have the feeling that that corner chair has been in the same corner for the last 200 years. This family has resisted the American tradition of renovating and redecorating every 20 or 30 years. It looks like everything has been furnished exactly the way that it was in 1931, all done with beautiful antiques,” Kolb said.

Despite being built in the 1930s, the home is in excellent condition.

“It is exactly in the same condition as it was when it was finished in 1931, ” Kolb said.
