Mercedes-Benz is again collaborating with pro surfer Garrett McNamara. This time they are not just making a singular design—they are releasing a series of surfboards dubbed the MBoard that are completely crafted from cork. While cork has been incorporated into surfboards in the past, this is the first to be crafted entirely from the versatile material.
“As Portugal is the world’s biggest producer of cork, it makes sense to use the material to produce high-performance surfboards,” McNamara said. “For surfing high waves, we need a flexible board that is also tough enough not to break.”
The board will be built for durability with the capability of withstanding ” the high waves in the northern bay of Nazaré,” according to McNamara. The cork being used to construct the board is the same used in some airplanes.
No word on when and if the board will go into mass production.
