Christopher Duffy’s The Abyss is a coffee table designed to look like a geological cross-section of the ocean.

Duffy is known for incorporating scientific ideas into his designs. He has previously designed pieces that involve space and gravity. This time Duffy tackles the ocean with a layered sculpted glass and wood, three-dimensional design.

“I was looking into sheets of thick glass at my glass manufacturer’s factory, and noticed how the material darkened as they added more layers – the same way the sea does as it deepen and I wanted to use this effect to replicate a real piece of the earth’s sea bed. Like a mythical power had lifted a perfect rectangle straight from the earth’s crust to use as his personal ornament,” Duffy said.

Each 36-inch long table is handmade, which is likely why it is limited to only 25 pieces. The Abyss has a $9,943 price tag.
