The speculation is over as the car that was revealed as a concept three long years ago made its debut in a big way at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show and is now in full production.
Porsche’s hybrid format 918 Spyder generates 880 BHP of engine thrust. Porsche put together the main power source of a V8 engine, generating 608 BHP, with the 156 BHP from the rear electric motor, and 116 BHP from the front. There are 5 driving modes, depending upon conditions, to optimize performance. The car goes 0 to 60 mph in less than 2.8 seconds when in full electric mode.
The car debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show by beating the road-legal Nordschleife lap record with a 6:57 lap time. To put that in perspective, the Ferrari 458 Italia put up a lap time of 7:32 and the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has a lap time 7:19 at the Nordschleife ring.
The Porsche 918 Spyder has a price tag a little smaller than most predicted, set at $845,000. The total production run is limited to just 918 units.
