Martin Aircraft Company in New Zealand has developed a jetpack prototype.
The military will be the first to receive a Martin Jetpack, but they could very well make their way into private garages sooner rather than later. The concept has already prompted the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority to issue a test license for the prototype.
If testing goes well and everybody is satisfied with the results, a military version of the Martin Jetpack will be released by the end of next year. A civilian model will then follow sometime in 2015. It is estimated that the Martin Jetpack will cost around $20,000.
Looks a little bulky… What kind of mileage does it get?
While undoubtedly cool, we are absolutely not prepared for this. What will the insurance rates be? Any licensing requirements? (There should be.) Or regulated like American guns where any idiot can get one? Can it be modified into a SuperTurbo version? Racing versions? Bigger garages for two cars plus the family jetpacks? Special parking areas for jetpacks? Danger to others on the ground from prop wash, collision? Can you even see directly below in order to safely land? I also wondered about the length of trip you can make on a tankful. That will significatly determine how its used and the kind of trips people make. What kind of fuel? Many questions but, still, way cool. Great get away device for a bank robber. Police will never get him.
