CNN founder and cable media mogul Ted Turner has taken one step closer to movie history by purchasing a South Dakota buffalo ranch used in major scenes of the Academy Award winning movie “Dances with Wolves.”
The 45,443-acre Stanley County ranch was sold to a limited liability partnership set at another South Dakota buffalo ranch owned by Turner. Although it now belongs to Standing Butte Ranch, which is under the media magnate’s ownership, his name is not on the new deed.
The former owner, Kay Ingle, is believed to be selling the expansive property to pay off other debts. The purchase price for the land is about $720 per acre for a total listed price of $32.4 million.
This is Turner’s 19th ranch purchase. The former Atlanta Braves owner holds 3 ranches in Argentina and 15 more, including Standing Butte Ranch, across the United States.
Since “Dances with Wolves” won seven Academy Awards—including Best Picture and Best Director—the property is sure to maintain its value.
