BMW showed off two prototypes of cars that wowed those in attendance at the 2014 Consumer Electronic Show (CES) . It was not the cars’ design or speed that turned heads. It was their ability to drive themselves that caught people’s attention.

The BMW ConnectedDrive prototypes have already logged 9,000 miles of driving through real-life city streets and on the German Autobahn. In other words, it is not just driving in a straight line on its own. Instead, it has the capability to drive in high-traffic and high-speed areas autonomously. The vehicle can even power slide on its own.

BMW showed off two different self-driving models at CES: An M235i Coupe and a 6-Series Gran Coupe. Both cars use cameras, ultrasonic sensors, GPS, and radar to drive themselves. This is also the first time we have seen cars with the capability to drive themselves that look like modern vehicles and not some strange Frankenstein car like Google’s self-driving car.

The cars are currently only prototypes with no plans in place for mass production. In fact, autonomous driving features are at least seven years away from being available to a mass market according to researchers.
